INSPIRATION FROM AROUND THE WORLD FOR AN AESTHETIC AND MEANINGFUL LIFESTYLE

Poetic License: The Idea of Balance

A Visual Meditation on Equilibrium and Awareness

In The Idea of Balance, director Nacho Errando turns his attention to a quiet yet fundamental force shaping our lives: balance. Created for NOWNESS, the short film unfolds as a poetic meditation on equilibrium as a link between body, mind, and environment.

Structured as a visual essay, the film brings together four distinct elements – skateboarding, spiders, a chair balancing on two legs, and a sculptural mobile by Barcelona-based designer Jordi Canudas. Though different in form, they are united by a shared tension: the delicate balance of opposing forces that allows stability to emerge.

Blending playful poetry with a refined visual language, Errando reflects on balance as an everyday condition rather than an abstract ideal. Nowhere is this more evident than in the presence of spiders – creatures that exist in a constant state of equilibrium.

“Spiders are tightrope walkers in their natural habitat – they spend their lives suspended on a web, using their legs to perform a constant act of balance.”

Shot between urban scenes in Valencia and intimate interiors, the film mirrors the contrast between external chaos and inner stillness. Errando captures the restless energy of the city alongside the fleeting thoughts that pass through our minds, reminding us of our ability to restore order by finding our own sense of balance.

The Idea of Balance is an invitation to pause – and to reconsider balance as a conscious, ongoing practice shaping how we move through the world.
