Australian experimental dance company Chunky Move blurs the boundaries between human and machine, exploring spirituality and technology through movement.
Exploring “machine mysticism” and the possibilities of spirituality in a post-industrial digital age, Australian experimental dance company Chunky Move brings its production U>N>I>T>E>D to film, extending artistic director Antony Hamilton’s ongoing exploration of speculative futures.
Equipped with exoskeletons developed by animatronic specialists Creature Technology Co., six dancers become cyborg-like hybrids. Dance, Javanese electronic music and mechanical movement create a space for examining the relationship between the human body and technology.
For the short film U>N>I>T>E>D Chinese-born French filmmaker Sylvia Suli translates the performance and its underlying philosophy into a striking futuristic visual language, bringing together technology and mythology, the ancient and the contemporary.
