Hotel Altstadt Vienna: Design Meets Viennese Soul

Arthur Arbesser creates two new rooms at Hotel Altstadt Vienna – with furnishings by Wittmann

When an internationally acclaimed designer joins forces with an iconic boutique hotel and a heritage furniture manufacturer, the result is more than a room – it’s a statement. Two newly designed rooms at Hotel Altstadt Vienna, created by Arthur Arbesser in collaboration with Wittmann, unite Viennese charm with Milanese flair.

A Home for Creativity

The Hotel Altstadt Vienna nestled in Vienna’s 7th district, is more than a place to stay – it’s a sanctuary where art, design, and hospitality merge. Since 1991, hotel founder Otto E. Wiesenthal has pursued his vision of a hotel that feels like a cross between an old Viennese apartment and a contemporary art gallery.

Following in the footsteps of design legends like Matteo Thun, Arthur Arbesser, a Vienna-born designer now based in Milan, brings his graphic aesthetics and interdisciplinary approach to the Altstadt’s latest interior project.

Room 14 – Viennese Jugendstil Meets Milanese Modernity

Deep blue, rich saffron yellow, and crisp white walls form the expressive base of this room’s design. The colorful FLOWERS fabric, co-created by Arbesser and Wittmann, covers the SPRING bed and a matching bench – an homage to Josef Frank. Classic pieces like the KUBUS armchair and FLEDERMAUS chair by Josef Hoffmann reflect Arbesser’s Viennese heritage.

Italian design icons such as the QUADERNA desk by Superstudio and the Snoopy lamp by the Castiglioni brothers add Milanese sophistication. The striped bathroom, with bold colors and graphic sharpness, pays tribute to Arbesser’s fashion roots.

I love hotels – especially those with charm and character, like Hotel Altstadt in Vienna.”
– Arthur Arbesser

Room 30 – A Homage to the Cube

Geometry as inspiration: Room 30 plays with shapes, contrasts, and structure. The centerpiece? A black-and-white glass cube bathroom, custom-built by Josef Göbel in Styria. Deconstructed cube elements continue in the brightly colored bedside tables and the ATRIUM sofa by Wittmann. The CHESS rug echoes the tiled hallways of traditional Viennese staircases.

Graphic touches include a frescoed border inspired by the Wiener Werkstätte, Bauhaus pieces like Breuer’s LACCIO table and Perriand’s LE GRAND BLEU lamp, and the standout mint green FREISCHWINGER chair by Friedrich Kiesler.

“I wanted the room to feel warm, inviting, and unmistakably Viennese – yet with a contemporary, creative twist.”
– Arthur Arbesser

A Trio Redefining Viennese Elegance

Arthur Arbesser, Wittmann and the Hotel Altstadt Vienna – three names that stand for quality, style, and artistic soul. Together, they’ve created interiors that are not only visually compelling but deeply inspiring. Rooms that tell stories – of Vienna, Milan, and the timeless beauty of thoughtful design.
