Lorenzo Agius and Izzy Weissgerber reveal how photography and painting merge into a new visual language in Mallorca
With ICONIC, the HMH Galeria in Port Andratx presents an exhibition that treats photography and painting not as opposing disciplines but as equal creative voices. From 22 August 2026 to 6 January 2027, internationally acclaimed photographer Lorenzo Agius joins forces with Berlin-based artist Izzy Weissgerber to create works that exist between image and intervention, where control meets surrender and glamour gives way to emotional depth.
Between Glamour and Humanity
For more than three decades, Lorenzo Agius has shaped the visual language of fashion, cinema and celebrity portraiture. His photographs of Cate Blanchett, Madonna, Ewan McGregor, Jude Law, Jack Nicholson and Valentino have become part of contemporary visual culture.
Yet Agius has never been interested in celebrity for its own sake. His portraits search for the fleeting instant when carefully constructed public personas reveal something unmistakably human. Rather than spectacle, he seeks trust, vulnerability and emotional resonance.
This approach first gained international recognition through his iconic imagery surrounding Trainspotting and later during Britain’s “Cool Britannia” era. Today, his work forms part of prestigious collections including London’s National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria & Albert Museum.
Painting as Emotional Intervention
Where Agius works with light, Izzy Weissgerber works with instinct.
The German-American artist combines painting, drawing and mixed media into expressive works that resist clear categorisation. Her artistic practice is deeply influenced by synesthesia, a rare neurological phenomenon through which she perceives every individual as a unique combination of colour and number.
Rather than concealing photography, her interventions intensify it. Bold gestures, vibrant colours and layered textures transform each portrait into an emotional landscape while preserving the original photographic presence.
Her distinctive style attracted international attention when Joe Dallesandro—actor and Andy Warhol muse—commissioned one of her portraits, introducing Weissgerber’s work to a wider global audience.
A Shared Creative Language
The strength of ICONIC lies in collaboration rather than alteration.
Weissgerbers painterly interventions never erase Agius’ photographs. Instead, they enrich them, adding psychological depth and opening entirely new emotional perspectives. The resulting works occupy a compelling space between permanence and transformation, visibility and concealment.
This shared authorship creates what could be described as a third visual language—one neither artist could have achieved independently.In an era dominated by endless streams of digital imagery, ICONIC offers something increasingly rare: presence. It encourages viewers to slow down, engage emotionally and discover meaning beneath the surface of familiar faces.

Following its acclaimed presentation during Berlin Gallery Weekend, ICONIC now arrives in Mallorca’s vibrant art scene. The exhibition at HMH Galeria features portraits of cultural icons including Cate Blanchett, Madonna, Jude Law and Diana Ross, reimagined through Weissgerber’s expressive artistic vocabulary.
More than a dialogue between photography and painting, ICONIC becomes a meditation on identity, memory and human presence—demonstrating that some of the most compelling contemporary art emerges not from individual expression alone, but from creative exchange.
