Some places in Mallorca have a history that predates tourism itself. Fontsanta Hotel Thermal Spa & Wellness is one of them. Long before the hotel
For centuries, special properties have been attributed to the waters of Fontsanta. People have been visiting the spring since Roman times. And naturally, a place with such a long history comes with its own legend.
It tells of an animal epidemic on Mallorca and the observation that animals bathing in the spring remained unaffected by the disease. Word spread, people began to arrive, a chapel and accommodation were built and, eventually, Fontsanta developed into a thermal bath.
In 1869, its waters were officially recognised as thermal waters of public benefit.
Much around the spring changed over the centuries. The water remained.
A story that never needed to be invented
In 1916, Don Cosme María Oliver acquired Fontsanta. More than a century later, the property remains in the hands of the Morell Oliver family. Eventually, Torre de Canyamel was commissioned to reinterpret the historic thermal baths and transform the site into the five-star hotel it is today.
Perhaps this is precisely what makes Fontsanta so compelling: there was never any need to invent a story for the hotel. It was already there.
The spring, the historic thermal baths, the landscape and the generations of people who travelled here created a heritage to which the present-day hotel has simply added another chapter.
Where history meets the present
Yet Fontsanta does not feel like a nostalgic grand hotel preserving its past behind glass. Mediterranean gardens, light-filled interiors and natural materials give the property a quiet, contemporary character.
An art collection created specifically for the hotel adds another dimension, with sculptures, paintings and installations throughout the property. It reflects an approach also found in other Torre de Canyamel hotels: respecting what already exists while always leaving space for something new.
And at the centre of it all remains the element with which the entire story began.
The thermal water is not an addition to the hotel. It is its origin.
The natural spring remains at the heart of the Thermal Spa today. What contemporary guests experience as wellness, retreat and regeneration connects Fontsanta with a history that began long before our modern concepts of spas and wellbeing existed.
Another side of Mallorca
Perhaps this is what makes Fontsanta such a fascinating addition to a journey through Mallorca. It does not attempt to replace anything we already love about the island.
The sea is still there. Es Trenc is close by. So are the small villages, restaurants, Mediterranean landscapes and long evenings that keep drawing us back.
Fontsanta simply adds something else.
A morning might begin in the thermal waters before heading towards the coast. Later, you return to the Mediterranean garden, and at some point a curious thought emerges: how many people must have travelled to this exact place before us, drawn here by the very same water?
In another era, with different expectations, on an entirely different Mallorca.
