Between Craft and Concept: A Creative Laboratory
In April 2026, Maison Margiela transformed a street in Shanghai into a living archive of its most radical ideas. The now-concluded exhibition “Artisanal: Our Creative Laboratory” offered a rare glimpse into the house’s creative DNA.
Couture as Experiment: An Open Archive
Held from April 2 to 6, 2026, the exhibition brought together 58 curated couture looks for the first time. Spanning decades, the selection traced the evolution of the Artisanal line—from its earliest expressions to contemporary creations.

The journey began with the iconic porcelain plate waistcoat from Autumn/Winter 1989 and culminated in a beeswax-treated gown from the Autumn/Winter 2026 show staged in Shanghai.
Artisanal is more than a couture line—it is the foundation of Maison Margiela’s creative language. Each piece is handcrafted in the Paris atelier, often using found materials reimagined through transformation and experimentation.

Thematic Spaces: Deconstruction, Upcycling, Illusion
Rather than a chronological display, the exhibition unfolded through thematic environments housed in open containers—echoing the scenography of the FW2026 show:

- Upcycling: Reclaiming materials as creative starting points
- Deconstruction: Revealing structure and process
- Trompe l’œil: Playing with perception
- Archetypes: Reimagining classic forms
- Raw Materials: The poetry of the unfinished
- Transformation of the Everyday: Reinterpreting reality through fashion
This curatorial approach emphasized Artisanal as a laboratory—an evolving space of experimentation and innovation.

Part of a Broader Narrative: MaisonMargiela/folders
The Shanghai exhibition marked the beginning of MaisonMargiela/folders, a multi-city project across China exploring the house’s core codes—from anonymity to the iconic Tabi and atelier practices.

Artisanal stood as the origin point—the creative engine driving the Maison forward.
Fashion as Intellectual Space
With “Artisanal: Our Creative Laboratory,” Maison Margiela once again demonstrated that fashion can function as a conceptual and cultural discourse.
Though the exhibition has now ended, its impact lingers—a fleeting yet powerful exploration of creativity.
