INSPIRATION FROM AROUND THE WORLD FOR AN AESTHETIC AND MEANINGFUL LIFESTYLE

Sophie Ashby – Between Bushveld and Urban Chic: Design with Story & Character

How heritage, art, and craftsmanship define Studio Ashby’s aesthetic universe – and Sister, its retail arm, makes the vision tangible.

Sophie Ashby is one of the most exciting voices in contemporary interior design. With Studio Ashby, she creates spaces that are cosmopolitan, art-driven, and deeply personal – shaped by a life between South Africa, the UK, and the US.

In 2014, at just 25, Sophie Ashby founded her own practice, Studio Ashby. Since then, she has become a leading figure in London’s design scene, with a portfolio ranging from private residences to boutique hotels.

Her signature design is a carefully balanced mix of old and new, where art, vintage finds, and contemporary pieces coexist. Often, a single artwork or object sets the tone, guiding the choice of colors, textures, and mood. The result: interiors that feel considered yet intuitive, luxurious yet livable.

In 2019, she launched Sister by Studio Ashby, the retail arm of her studio. Located in a historic London building, Sister offers furniture, textiles, art, and accessories – some designed by Ashby herself, others carefully curated from global sources. It extends her creative universe, allowing design enthusiasts to access her aesthetic without commissioning a full interior project.

What defines Sophie Ashby is her sense of narrative: each room tells a story, woven from heritage, art, craft, and memory. Her interiors are not simply decorative – they are spaces of identity, layered and alive.
