INSPIRATION FROM AROUND THE WORLD FOR AN AESTHETIC AND MEANINGFUL LIFESTYLE

Andy Warhol – Serial Portraits at Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo

Insights into Andy Warhol’s play with identity and self-staging – in the exhibition Serial Portraits at Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo.

Das Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo presents Andy Warhol – Serial Portraits, an exhibition revealing both celebrated and lesser-known sides of the Pop Art master. Portraits, self-staging, and rarely shown drawings engage in a captivating dialogue about identity, disguise, and the art of the 20th century.

Andy Warhol was a master of multiplicity – artist, filmmaker, producer, designer, publisher, and pop icon. The exhibition Serial Portraits at Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo (October 2, 2025 – February 15, 2026) highlights the central role of portraiture in Warhol’s practice and the ways he continuously reinvented his own image.

From his early years, Warhol compulsively collected faces, sketched them, and later translated them into countless silkscreens, photographs, Polaroids, and films. With wigs, dark glasses, and theatrical disguises, he staged identity as a fluid construct – a theme that remains as relevant today as ever.

“Warhol’s self-portraits, his ‘in drag’ Polaroids, and his iconic photo booth images show him as a master of transformation – raising the question of how much identity is a construction.”

The exhibition spans from his early ballpoint pen sketches of young men in the 1950s to later works such as The Shadow (1981) and Ten Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century. Together, they form a collective portrait of an era, where art, society, and the media world were deeply intertwined.

Through Serial Portraits, the Fondation Louis Vuitton Hors-les-Murs programme makes significant works from its collection accessible to an international audience – inviting visitors to rediscover Warhol’s ongoing play with image and identity.
