Braid: A Poetic Reflection on Sisterhood and Separation

With Braid, Polish filmmakers Mateusz Miszczynski and Maria Słabek create a delicate cinematic portrait of sisterhood, growing up, and the quiet emotional weight of leaving home. At the center of the film are Belarusian sisters Anastasiia and Polina, whose bond is shaped by intimacy and challenged by distance as the older sister leaves Minsk behind to begin a new life in Warsaw.

Balancing documentary realism with poetic observation, Braid captures the fragile emotions that accompany separation and transition. The braid itself becomes a subtle yet powerful symbol — an invisible thread connecting memory, identity, and belonging across borders and time.

Shot on 35mm, the film blends naturalistic moments with touches of magical realism, transforming everyday life into something almost dreamlike. Inspired by the sisters’ real experiences, Miszczynski and Słabek create a deeply human story that feels both intimate and universal.

Braid is ultimately a meditation on growing up, longing for a different future, and the enduring emotional strength of family connections.
