Hidden in Rome’s historic Regola district lies a place that deliberately challenges the traditional idea of luxury hospitality. The Nomos Hotel is not a conventional boutique hotel but a poetic retreat composed of stone, wood and light. Created by Italian designer and artisan Henry Timi, the property presents itself as an “anti-hotel” – reduced, contemplative and radically focused on essentials.
A new definition of luxury
Nomos occupies a restored 18th-century building that once served as a Franciscan monastery. Its monastic past still shapes the atmosphere of the hotel today. Instead of decorative opulence, a sense of almost spiritual calm defines the space – architecture that intentionally leaves room for silence.
Designer Henry Timi describes the concept as a return to essentials. Luxury here emerges not through excess but through reduction. The rooms – which he calls “raw rooms” – feel like sculptural spaces where materials themselves become the design language.
Material as experience
Stone, wood, metal, clay, travertine and terracotta define the interior landscape of the hotel. Many elements were crafted by local artisans or produced in-house, creating a tactile materiality that feels almost archaic in an age of digital perfection.
Raw plastered walls, handmade flooring and restrained colour palettes – from biscuit beige to deeper earth tones – allow the building’s history to remain visible. Light falls through large windows onto textured surfaces, creating spaces that feel both monumental and meditative.
A place to pause
Nomos is not merely a hotel but a space for reflection. Its stripped-back design invites guests to slow down and reconnect with themselves – a counterpoint to the vibrant energy of Rome’s streets.
On the ground floor, guests find a minimalist restaurant and bar alongside a courtyard, while the basement houses a small spa, gym and wine cellar.
