INSPIRATION FROM AROUND THE WORLD FOR AN AESTHETIC AND MEANINGFUL LIFESTYLE

Gina Drewes Bonguile: When Fashion Becomes Connection

A Collection Between Continents

What happens when a personal encounter evolves into a design philosophy?
With the Bonguile Collection, Austrian designer Gina Drewes demonstrates how fashion can extend far beyond aesthetics.

Created for her label Monkey on my Shoulder, the limited-edition unisex sets carry both stylistic clarity and social impact. A portion of the proceeds supports the Bonguile Project in Mozambique.

Origins in Vilankulos

The story begins in Vilankulos, where Drewes first encountered the Bonguile Project. Located in the Quinto Congresso district, the preschool provides early education and a sense of community for young children.

Run by ParCo, the initiative focuses on sustainable, community-driven development. Around 70 children aged three to five benefit from the program each year.

Fabric as a Language of Respect

Back in Europe, memories turned into material. African cotton fabrics became the starting point for a collection that emphasizes interpretation over appropriation.

No direct references—only textile love letters.

Colors, textures, and rhythms are translated into a distinct design language, rooted in respect and awareness.

“It’s not about taking something—it’s about creating something new from it and contributing in an honest way.” – Gina Drewes

The collection features ten surfer sets designed as complete looks:

  • airy cotton fabrics
  • relaxed, flowing silhouettes
  • oversized, unisex cuts
  • minimal yet expressive design

These pieces adapt to the wearer, not the other way around.

Fashion as an Ongoing Process

Rejecting traditional drop cycles, the collection evolves continuously. Sold-out pieces are replaced with new designs, allowing the collection to grow organically.

Fashion becomes a living system rather than a fixed moment.

Impact Beyond Aesthetics

35% of net proceeds directly support ParCo and the Bonguile Project, contributing to education and community development in Mozambique.
