With the newly unveiled sidewalk terrace at the Hotel Zur Wiener Staatsoper in Vienna, a new, luminous facet of this urban jewel comes to life. Hotel director Victoria Klinkhammer reveals which culinary destinations in Vienna’s city centre gleam most brightly for her.
The newly opened sidewalk terrace in front of the Boutiquehotel Zur Wiener Staatsoper becomes a quiet space of pause within the city’s rhythm. Like a gentle threshold between the hotel’s sheltered world and Vienna’s vibrant pulse, it blurs the boundaries between arriving and exploring. At the same time, it extends an invitation to rediscover the culinary diversity of Vienna’s city centre.

“Like the hotel itself, the Schanigarten is small, highly private, and invitingly cosy—yet set right in the heart of Vienna’s city centre. That balance is precisely what gives it its distinctive charm. At the moment, my personal favourite is our Martini Spritz, accompanied by the Burrata Harmonie with burrata, pesto, and oven-roasted tomatoes. It is a refined place for the first coffee of the day, a brief moment of respite in between, or the golden hours of the evening.”

Kleines Café at the Franziskanerplatz
“One of my favourite spots in the city centre. The cosy atmosphere and the beautiful Franziskanerplatz make every visit feel special. Slightly set back from Kärntner Straße, yet right in the heart of it all. Over a classic Wiener Melange and something sweet on the side, it is the perfect place to watch the life of the square unfold at a leisurely pace.”
Beaulieu in the Palais Ferstel
“A stylish destination with a distinctive ambience. The historic Palais and its French-inspired cuisine turn every visit into an experience. My personal recommendations include a quiche for lunch, a baguette to enjoy on the go, or mussels in the evening.”
Feinkosterei at Neuen Markt
“I am particularly fond of the concept of serving Austrian classics in smaller portions—perfect for exploring Vienna’s culinary heritage step by step. I especially enjoy ordering the veal cream goulash or the salmon risotto. To accompany it, a Grüner Veltliner or a Gemischter Satz.”
Tartarie Marie at the Freisingergasse
“My tip for a quick yet exceptionally high-quality bite. This small venue offers only a handful of seats, but more than makes up for it with premium ingredients and creative tartare variations, served in a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere.”
Reserva Ibérica by Paco at the Wallnerstraße
“Perfect for an aperitif or a relaxed end to the day. I particularly appreciate the Spanish specialities, the excellent wine selection, and the laid-back atmosphere. For sharing, I like to order tapas—from patatas bravas and gambas al ajillo to jamón ibérico. To accompany it, a glass of Spanish white wine or, on warm summer days, a jug of their excellent sangria.”
