Giuseppe Penone: Thoughts in the Roots

-

Last chance: On view until 7 September 2025 at Serpentine, London

Until 7 September 2025 Serpentine South in London presents the most comprehensive exhibition to date of Italian artist Giuseppe Penone. Titled Thoughts in the Roots, the show unfolds as a poetic dialogue between art and nature – inside the gallery and across the surrounding Royal Park.

Art and Nature as One

A leading figure of the Arte Povera movement, Penone has been working since the 1960s with elemental materials such as wood, marble, bronze, and leaves. His works reveal the delicate yet powerful imprints exchanged between body and nature – transient, vital, and poetic.

Exhibition Highlights

  • Respirare l’ombra (To Breathe the Shadow, 1999): An immersive installation of laurel leaves that transforms breath and impermanence into an experience.
  • Soffio di foglie (Breath of Leaves): The imprint of Penone’s body and breath in a bed of boxwood leaves.
  • Alberi (Trees, from 1969): Sculptures exposing the hidden time and growth rings of trees.
  • A occhi chiusi (With Eyes Closed, 2009): A reflection on vision, imagination, and nature.

A Poetic Journey

Through works indoors and outdoors, Thoughts in the Roots creates a landscape where visitors can sense the fragile yet profound connection between humanity and nature.
