A Tribute to Campari /seen by Matteo Thun

Campari

From Friday, October 13 to Sunday, October 22, design and Campari lovers will get their money’s worth! During this period, part of the Campari Bar in Vienna will become a gallery with specially designed museum architecture, thus providing insights into the world of Matteo Thun and Campari.

Matteo Thun has already realized iconic designs for Campari. Together with Peter Friese, the legendary host at the Schwarzer Kameel and the mastermind behind the Campari Wien bar, the architect has now conceived a show of his work that is best visited with an aperitivo.

How it all began …

Born in South Tyrol, Matteo Thun advanced to become an architect and designer of world renown. With his design and architecture studio Thun & Partners, founded in Milan in 1984, he realized iconic projects around the globe, characterized by authenticity and a distinctive signature. His work combines sensory experience and pleasure, always focusing on the positive relationship between people, places and objects.

“In 1984, the year I opened my own studio, Campari engaged me for the first time. We shared a fascination with futurism, which shaped the brand’s image from the beginning. Together we developed various glass and ceramic objects that echoed the spirit of Depero. Campari decided to use them as giveaways – a very innovative way to promote the brand at the time. I am delighted that these unique pieces are now being exhibited for the first time in the Depero decor at Bar Campari Vienna,” says Matteo Thun.

He has a special history with both Vienna – where Matteo Thun taught design at the University of Applied Arts between 1983 and 1996 – and Campari. Thun realized numerous projects for the cult brand between 1985 and 1992, including the V-shaped Via Col Vento glass and the Bomb vase, which can also be used as a shaker.

But there is still a strong “link” between the Austrian capital and Campari: Peter Friese. And the circle with Matteo Thun closes in the 2019 opened Bar Campari Vienna, the only official bar Campari outside Italy. For the multi-award-winning architect was Friese’s “dream candidate” for the realization of his “dream bar” in the vibrant center of Vienna. It took some patience and persistence on Friese’s part to win Thun over to the project, but during a visit to Milan, to which Thun had invited Friese, the foundation stone for the collaboration was laid. And common ground became apparent: both hearts beat for quality, for perfection, and both are united by a great passion for what they do, also a passion for good, exceptional taste.
