ÆTHER/MASS presents four new design objects – a liaison between concept and craftsmanship

ÆTHER/MASS, the Brussels-based design studio by Davy Grosemans, is unveiling four extraordinary pieces this autumn – objects in which masterful craftsmanship becomes a revelation. For the designer, each creation is an “object in search of meaning” – a piece that merges function with significance, where aesthetics arise as a fascinating by-product.

The new collection introduces works in glass, upholstery, and natural stone for the first time, alongside three forged objects in steel and bronze. They will be presented in September at the Curated exhibition in Brussels and in October at PAD London, as part of a group presentation at the Belgian Ambassador’s Residence.

Highlights of the new collection:

  • Cubist Chair: Developed in collaboration with Martijn Stelt, this sculptural seat is built from four identical cubes. Depending on the perspective, its form shifts, challenging conventional notions of furniture.
  • Forge Candlestick: An abstracted interpretation of the candlestick – hand-forged in bronze, with visible traces of the forging process, resulting in a strong sculptural presence.
  • Forge Guéridon: A refined round side table whose silhouette, inspired by the human form, is subtly zoomorphic – elegant and understated.
  • Strata Mirror: A mirror framed by stacked layers of glass that play with light, reflection, and perception, offering a dynamic spatial experience.

The design philosophy:

Grosemans believes in the transformative power of working with true artisans as mentors – stepping into the workshop as a novice and leaving with a physical object that translates his vision into matter. For him, aesthetics emerge as “beauty by accident”, an unexpected by-product of the creative process. Function and meaning are not opposites at ÆTHER/MASS but complementary dimensions.
