Exploring the Royal Discipline of Art – at Albertina Klosterneuburg
In 2025, Albertina Klosterneuburg dedicates itself entirely to sculpture with the major exhibition “De Sculptura”. Sculpture is celebrated here as a medium of immediacy, inviting direct spatial and emotional engagement.
Running from August 29 to November 16, 2025, the show presents around 70 works by internationally acclaimed artists – including Roy Lichtenstein, Alex Katz, Andreas Slominski, Erwin Wurm, and Claudia Märzendorfer.
Sculpture Reimagined
The exhibition highlights how sculpture has evolved: from traditional materials like bronze or wood to contemporary uses of textiles, plastics, or industrial objects.
Roy Lichtenstein’s vibrant bronze Brushstrokes, Alex Katz’s iconic Cut-outs, and Andreas Slominski’s provocative “traps” showcase the diversity and innovation of sculptural practice today. Far from static, sculpture here becomes a dynamic reflection of society, perception, and space.
From Pop Art to Subversion
While Lichtenstein monumentalizes the aesthetics of comics and advertising, Slominski blurs the line between art and life – witty, critical, and profound. Alongside, works by artists like Kiki Kogelnik, capturing the spirit of the 1960s, or Heimo Zobernig, who radically questions the framework of art, broaden the dialogue.
„De Sculptura“ wird so zu einer Reflexion über die Rolle der Skulptur heute – als Ausdruck von Tradition, Innovation und gesellschaftlicher Relevanz.
“De Sculptura” thus becomes a survey of sculpture’s relevance today – as a form rooted in both tradition and contemporary discourse.
