About the exhibition “Helmut Newton. Legacy”.

With the retrospective “Helmut Newton Legacy”, the Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien celebrates the 100th birthday of the controversial Berlin photographer (1920-2004) – delayed due to corona, but all the more comprehensive with some 300 works documenting Newton’s entire oeuvre.

Although Newton is primarily known for his images of women, his career developed primarily from fashion photography: in 1960s Paris, he began to stage his models garishly, thus changing the view of the saturated scene of haute couture.

Ultimately as a result, Newton turned to nude photography in the 1980s. With sharply drawn models, in almost militant nudity, whose sexuality appears self-determined and active, Newton tests social-moral boundaries. He still challenges us now – or, above all, challenges us again – to ask new questions. The show focuses on the entire oeuvre in the field of tension between art and commerce, which reflects the changing zeitgeist from the 1960s to around the turn of the millennium – and today has to face a wokeness debate.
