Zurich: Galerie Gmurzynska shows cross-genre ATTERSEE retrospective

Galerie Gmurzynska is showing a retrospective of the entire oeuvre of the legendary Austrian artist Christian Ludwig Attersee in its two Zurich exhibition spaces. The exhibition brings together paintings and sculptures from the 1960s through to his latest, cross-genre paintings from today.

Attersees independent and at the same time ground-breaking creative approach has survived through the forms of Viennese Actionism, Fluxus, international Pop and Dada, imaginatively infiltrating them with virtuoso technique and humorous innovations. His art has always had a special eye for motifs of consumption, love, male beauty and food.

“An Attersee painting is always a celebration, an event, a boiling over with a new visual language, an inventive symbolism of life, love and nature. His paintings are meant to be seen, smelt, tasted and loved.

Max Hollein Director Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

This exhibition at Galerie Gmurzynska in Zurich follows Attersee’s celebrated return last year with solo exhibitions in New York and the return of the “Luna Luna” artist carnival from 1987 in Los Angeles in 2023, including, incidentally successful sailor, Attersee’s ship swing.

Attersees lasting influence on contemporary art can be summarised in the words of contemporary star Jamian Juliano-Villani: “He is a genius. We have come to the conclusion that he is more advanced than we are.”

Zu der Ausstellung erscheint ein vollständig illustrierter monografischer Katalog, herausgegeben vom Kunstforum Wien mit Beiträgen von Max Hollein, Ingried Brugger, Daniela Gregori und Rainer Metzger.
