Heymat – Doormat Design from Norway

Heymat

Scandinavian design combined with the quality and functionality of industrial doormats. Living in the deepest north of Norway means facing the challenges of a particularly harsh climate. Snow, rain and wind are the order of the day – but natural phenomena such as the fascinating northern lights or the magnificent midnight sun also characterise the country, the people and thus also the Norwegian brand Heymat.

With the vision of offering Scandinavian design doormats in the high-quality of industrial doormats that can take on the harsh climate of the North, the couple Sonja Djønne and Thoralf Lian founded the label Heymat in 2015, based in Mo i Rana, Norway:

“We want to design doormats that are functional, high quality as well as environmentally friendly, but at the same time aesthetically pleasing. Based on this unique combination of quality, sustainability and design, we launched the first SPOT collection in 2016.”

Three generations go back to the extensive know-how from the cleaning industry in the field of industrial doormats, which founder Thoralf Lian has at his disposal for the development of the products.

In combination with Sonja Djønne’s passion for interior architecture and design, floor mats have been created since 2015 whose quality and design have proven themselves beyond the borders of Norway and which are now already sold online and in stores in large parts of Europe, America and Asia.

Scandinavian design

Norwegian design DNA down to the smallest detail: the Scandinavian timeless mats are created in cooperation with Scandinavian designers who find an inexhaustible source of inspiration for their designs in the rugged nature of Norway with its vast landscapes, fascinating polar lights and cold winter periods.

A collaboration that pays off: the HEYMAT+ collection by award-winning designer Kristine Five Melvær has already secured, among others, the German Design Award 2020, the “Vakre hverdagsvarer” (Beautiful Everyday Products) award at the Norwegian trade fair “Ditt Hjem 2019”, an Archiproducts Design Award 2019 and a nomination for the NYCxDesign Awards 2019. Other established designers who regularly create motifs for Heymat include Cathrine Christensen, Hege Homstvedt, Caroline Ohlsson and Magnus Voll Mathiassen.

Industrial quality

The industrial quality of Heymat’s doormats is based on years of experience in the cleaning industry. This acquired and well-founded know-how in the field of industrial doormats flows into the development of the various collections, which are designed with the greatest care and manufactured to a high degree by hand in order to achieve a particularly outstanding quality:

  • The rough surface structures of the mats guarantee excellent suction and cleaning power, absorbing any form of dirt and moisture.
  • Thanks to the non-slip nitrile rubber backing, they always stay in place.
  • To clean the mats, they can be easily vacuumed or washed at 60 °C in the washing machine and then dried.

Sustainability

For the founding couple Sonja Djønne and Thoralf Lian, environmentally friendly and sustainable production is a matter of course. Since the company was founded, the proportion of recycled plastic has been steadily increased:

  • For the back of the floor mats, only nitrile rubber is used, which is partly made from recycled material.
  • In 2017, nylon was replaced by PET, which consists of 50 percent recycled plastic.
  • In 2018, the Heymat+ collection was introduced, whose pile is made of 100% recycled plastic.
  • Since the end of 2020, the pile of every mat is made of 100% recycled PET.
  • The high industrial standard guarantees a particularly high durability, therefore Heymat can be used for many years in the entrance area, in the kitchen, on the balcony or even as a playground for many years.
